Gli avverbi di frequenza esprimono con quale frequenza un’azione viene eseguita.

Gli avverbi di frequenza in inglese

Si distinguono in base alla frequenza che indicano, te ne elenco alcuni qui sotto (100% = sempre, 0% = mai)

• always 100%
• usually – normally – generally 80%
• often 70%
• sometimes 50%
• occasionally 50%
• rarely 30%
• seldom 30% (non usatissimo nell’inglese moderno)
• hardly ever 10% (come “usually” ma con senso negativo. “Quasi mai”)
• never 0%

Come usare gli avverbi di frequenza in inglese

Si mettono quasi sempre tra il soggetto e il verbo. Ad esempio:

• I always go to the movies on the weekend
• Mark rarely eat at home
• They never sing

Eccezioni

► Il verbo TO BE fa eccezione e gli avverbi di frequenza si mettono dopo il verbo.

• I am always late!
• Things are often complicated

► “Sometimes” e “Usually” (e i suoi sinonimi) possono essere usati anche a inizio frase.

• Usually he’s not late.
• Sometimes I like to be alone.

► “Never” non si usa con il verbo negativo

• I never eat pizza – Non mangio mai la pizza

Avverbi di frequenza con gli ausiliari nei tempi composti e con i verbi modali

In questi casi vanno messi dopo l’ausiliare o il modale:

• I have always liked France – Mi è sempre piaciuta la Francia
• You can never trust him! – Non puoi mai fidarti di lui!
